Picking the right inverter generator.
Knowing which inverter generator provides enough power for your requirements without blowing your budget is a difficult balance. This guide is here to provide you with enough information to choose the right inverter generator without blowing your budget.
What is an Inverter Generator?
An inverter generator is a portable generator which offers quiet, clean energy to power electronic appliances. They are small, light and portable, often powered by a petrol engine or by LPG because they are generally quieter than diesel engines. Inverter generators are ideal for camping, caravans and outdoor functions such as weddings or parties.
When working out what size generator you need, it is always best to check each product's specific power specifications to make sure that the generator can supply enough power. Generators should be run at around 70% of their maximum power output to ensure that you do not damage your appliances or the generator. Watch out specifically for appliances with starter motors as their start-up power requirement can be between 3 and 6 times more than the ongoing running power requirement, this is called the appliance's inductive load.
Many of our inverter generators can also be converted to become dual fuel generators which also run off LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). A lot of caravans and motor homes will have a supply of LPG used for cooking and BBQ's which you can plug you generator straight into.
Small Inverter Generators (up to 1kW)
If you're looking to run 1 or 2 small appliances at the same time then generally a small inverter generator of 1kW or less will be enough. A laptop will require approximately 0.25kW and a coffee maker will require around 0.6kW for example. The most popular brands that we stock for smaller inverter generators are Evopower, Kipor and Honda.
Evopower EVO1000i 1kW Inverter Generator
Kipor IG770 - 0.62kW Portable Inverter Generator
Honda EU10i - 1kW LPG Inverter Generator
Medium Inverter Ge nerators
If you are looking to take the comforts of home with you as you venture in to the great outdoors, then you will need a larger generator than the ones we have listed above. Maybe your next 'glamping' trip involves rotating between appliances such as air conditioning (or a heater depending on the time of year), microwaves, hair dryers or a toaster then you're going to need a generator that can supply between 2 and 3kW. If at this stage you are unsure whether you need a small or a medium generator, it is best to be cautious and go for the larger generator which you know is going to be enough for your requirements. Our best selling brands in this category are Evopower, Hyundai and Champion.
Hyundai HY2000Si - 2kW Inverter Generator
Evopower 3000ei - 2.8kW Electric Start Inverter Generator
Champion 72310i-E 2.3kW Inverter Generator
Large Inverter Generators
Sometimes rotating between appliances isn't good enough and you need to use several at once. What if you're running your whole caravan off the generator and you're catering for a group of people? You may need to run a fridge, a cooker, a microwave and a toaster at the same time? Or maybe you just want to ensure that no matter what happens, your generator is able to cope with several high wattage appliances simultaneously. Not only will you need a generator with a larger engine to cope with the load, you'll also need a larger fuel tank so that you don't have to keep topping it up every hour. Some generators also come with an optional "eco" mode which lowers the engine's revs to match the load which expands the fuel economy of the generator and also lowers noise. Our most popular large inverter brands are Yamaha, Hyundai and Honda.
Yamaha EF3000ISE 4kW Inverter Generator
Hyundai HY3600SEi 3.4kW Inverter Generator
Honda EU70is 5.5kW Inverter Generator
